Mid-Year Recitation & Awards

On the 7th of June we finished the first semester of the school year.  We invited parents to the school for recitations, other student performances, awards, and parent-teacher conferences.  We had a great turnout, which I am so thankful for.  It shows me that parents are involved and care about their child's education.  It's a great opportunity to see all that students have learned and get personal feedback from the teachers.  Here are some of the student performances to enjoy.

We began with our Pre-Primary 3 class (the equivalent of kindergarten in the states).  They recited little poems that they have been learning in their class.  Keep in mind that they started school just two years ago with basically no English.  Pretty remarkable!

Then Standard 2 marched on stage "in the light of God"...

and taught us about the parts of plants with impressive vocabulary...

and the life cycle of a frog with visual support in the background for parents to have a better understanding of what the students were singing about.

Next up was a play by Standard 1 called The Miss Jino Play.  Jino means tooth, so it was a skit to teach the importance of brushing your teeth after eating sweets.  I'll be honest, I think they needed a bit more practice especially with using a microphone, but the parents got a good laugh and enjoyed it nonetheless.  Mr. Pipi is selling pipis (sweets).  The "mama" with a toothache doesn't speak English, so "her son" translates for her while he takes her to the dentist.  I captured just a few short clips of the play.  Lights, camera, action...

We took a break from performances to hand out mid-year award certificates.  Honor roll means that they had all As except for 1 B for both terms in the semester.  Dean's List means they had all As for both terms in the semester. Then classroom teachers select one student who is most improved since the beginning of the year and one student who has shown outstanding Christian character.

We finished off the program with our oldest primary students, Standard 7, singing the East African Anthem.  It was a new one for me, but I think it's beautiful and I hope to learn it soon.

And so concluded the first half of the school year!
